Australian Nick Kyrgios overpowered Cristian Garin, winning in straight three sets 6-4 6-3 7-6 to book a seat in the semifinals for the first time at Wimbledon. Injury-stricken Rafael Nadal overcame 11th seed Taylor Fritz, 3-6 7-5 3-6 7-5 7-6, showcasing high-octane tennis on centre court.
Kyrgios was locked in during the match, providing a game devoid of drama. With 17 aces in the match, his powerful serve helped him when he needed it the most. Garin, hailing from Chile, made a brave effort to take down the Australian. In the end, Kyrgios came through and the crowd was ecstatic over his win.
Meanwhile, Nadal and Fritz displayed some fiery tennis on centre court. Around the beginning of the second set, Nadal was visibly physically uncomfortable and took a medical timeout because of abdomen problems. His father who was seated in the Player’s Box had indicated to him to retire the match. Nadal, ignoring the sign, went to put up a masterclass against Fritz. The American ploughed through Nadal and had match-changing points several times throughout. His turnout rate was lower than he expected. With some long rallies and unexpected shots, both the players used their massive forehands to battle each other. In his on-court speech, Nadal remarked on how great Taylor is after winning the battle.
This sets up Nadal vs Kyrgios in the semi-finals of Wimbledon 2022 on Friday. Home-ground favourite Cameron Norrie and former Champion Novak Djokovic also go head-to-head on the same day, as the four players battle it out for a place in the finals.
