US Open 2022: Serena Williams Wins 1st Round Clash

In what is anticipated to be Serena Williams’ farewell competition, the 23-time Grand Slam champion waltzed into the second round of the US Open on Monday in dramatic New York.

In front of a frenzied Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd on Monday night (August 29), Williams overcame a poor start to defeat Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3. The occasion seemed more like a carnival than a farewell.

Williams wasn’t at her best early on. There were double-faults. Other squandered opportunities and strokes. She immediately fell down 3-2 after taking the lead 2-0. Then, with less than a month until her 41st birthday, Williams began to resemble someone who had won six titles at Flushing Meadows and 23 Grand Slams overall—numbers that had never been surpassed in the professional history of tennis, which began in 1968.

Williams will keep playing and take against Estonia’s Anett Kontveit, the No. 2 seed, on Wednesday. There is no question that people from all over the world will return to the US Open in 2022 to see Serena – no last name is necessary, befitting someone who is both an icon and a superstar athlete – excited to see her play or, if they are not fortunate enough to have the appropriate ticket, hoping for an autograph, a glimpse of her practising, or simply the chance to share the same Flushing Meadows air with her.
