Iga Swiatek, the world’s top player, defeated Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the US Open finals on Sunday to claim her second Grand Slam Championship of the year in straight sets. In 1 hour and 52 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Polish star Iga Swiatek defeated fifth seed Ons Jabeur after a valiant comeback in the second set.
The triumph became Swiatek, 21, the first woman to win two Grand Slams in a single season since 2016 after she won the French Open in June. Iga Swiatek maintained her dominance in final game with her ninth career triumph.
She has now won ten consecutive finals without losing a set. However, the loss was yet another agonisingly close call for Jabeur, who was aiming to become the first African woman to win a Grand Slam. Also in July, the 28-year-old Tunisian lost in the Wimbledon final.
Ons Jabeur excelled and inched closer to the title, dropping just one set while compiling a string of assured performances. She was in trouble very immediately, though, to the clinical Swiatek who quickly settled into her rhythm and was in full flow with her serve and distinctive forehand.
