Following Sri Lanka’s success in the Asia Cup 2022, residents in Afghanistan flocked to the streets to celebrate the island nation’s sixth title win, which comes while the country faces a terrible economic crisis. Sri Lanka won its sixth Asia Cup championship on Sunday, defeating Pakistan by 24 runs thanks to a stunning half-century from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and scorching spells from spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and pacer Pramod Madushan.
In a video provided by Afghanistan journalist Abdulhaq Omeri, a large gathering of people was seen in the street, some applauding and others dancing in celebration of Sri Lanka’s victory. People rushed to social media to praise Sri Lanka on their victory as well as to mock the Pakistani team’s play in the final, particularly when fielding.
This comes after skirmishes were reported between Afghan and Pakistani supporters after the latter won the Super Four phase of the Asia Cup 2022 in Sharjah on Wednesday. Afghanistan performed admirably at the Asia Cup 2022. They advanced to the Super Four stage of the competition after defeating Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the Group Stage, but failed to win any games in the Super Four stage, collapsing to Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India.
