Jayawardene Steps Down As Mumbai Indians Head Coach As He Is Given Global Role

Mahela Jayawardene has left his position as head coach of the Mumbai Indians because the team has now named him Global Head of Performance. Previously serving as the Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan now has a new position. The former Indian bowler will now oversee cricket development globally for MI. According to a Mumbai Indians press announcement, the two make up the core of the franchise’s “expanding worldwide cricket reach.”

The two former players were given more important duties as MI entered the T20 leagues in South Africa and the UAE. Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan have been promoted by the Mumbai Indians ownership to new positions with the goal of creating a global cricket legacy for MI, according to the team’s statement.

“As part of strengthening the structure, two MI veterans Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan with deep understanding of the MI value system and proven track record, are being elevated to new responsibilities,” MI wrote in reference to Jayawardene’s new position.

Additionally, according to the statement, Zaheer Khan “will be responsible for player development, building on MI’s robust programme around talent identification and grooming and adopting the same across geographies, which has been core to MI’s philosophy and success.” Each geography has its own particular set of challenges, and Zaheer’s elevated role will play a crucial role in assisting MI teams around the world.
