Rakuten Japan Open Day 7: Fritz beats Tiafoe to lift the title in Tokyo

The all American final was set for today at the Ariake Tennis Center in Tokyo as Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz faced off against each other. Tokyo was going to witness a first American champion since the 1996 event which was won by Pete Sampras.

Eventually, the trophy went to third seed Taylor Fritz who won both sets on a tiebreak 7-6(3) 7-6(2). Fourth seed Tiafoe came into the match having won 13 straight tiebreaks. But today his American counterpart had been the player on both the tiebreaks.

Fritz held the upper hand through most of the match creating more break point opportunities compared to his opponent. On winning the title, Fritz moves into the top 10 of the ATP rankings and becomes the first American to lift the title since 1996.
