After the game was cut short by rain, the Sri Lankan spinners maintained their calm to overcome the tournament hosts and defending champions Bangladesh by a narrow margin of three runs and advance to the semifinals. Nilakshi de Silva’s unbeaten 28 helped Sri Lanka recover from being 31/3 to 83/5 until a protracted delay brought about by start and stop rain forced the end of their innings.
When the game finally restarted, the hosts DLS adjusted target was 41off 7 overs. Bangladesh, despite having lost two early wickets in the run a ball chase, appeared to be on track before seasoned left arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera snatched up three wickets in the last over and a run out turned the game on its head.
Despite having one more chance to score 11, Bangladesh could only accomplish seven points, falling to fifth place overall. However, they still have a game to play and, thanks to their favourable NRR, have the power to decide whether or not they go to the knockout rounds.
Brief scores: Sri Lanka 83/5 in 18.1 overs (Nilakshi de Silva 28*, Ruaman Ahmed 2-14) beat Bangladesh 37/7 in 7 overs (Nigar Sultana 12, Inoka Ranaweera 4/7) by 3 runs (DLS method : DLS target : 41off 7 overs).
