Diogo Jota ruled out of the FIFA World Cup with a calf injury

Portugal’s World Cup campaign takes a hit as their forward Diogo Jota has been ruled out of the tournament that takes place in Qatar. Portugal are scheduled to kick off their campaign against Ghana on the 24th of November. They would unfortunately not be able to take Jota along with him.

The Liverpool forward sustained a severe calf injury during their 1-0 victory against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. He had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gave an update on Jota’s injury in the pre-match press conference for the game against West Ham United. “There’s really no good news on Diogo. Yes, he will miss the World Cup. He has a pretty serious injury in the calf muscle and now the recovery process starts”, he said.

“That was the first diagnosis and it was pretty clear. The rest will follow in the coming days. It is very sad for the boy and for us and Portugal”, he added.

Klopp did not provide a hint at when Jota would return to the pitch. The Portuguese will also miss Liverpool’s remaining eight games prior to the international break in November.

Jota even took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the injury.
