The second day of the Astana Open went underway earlier today in Astana, Kazakhstan. Some big names were in action today in the likes of US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz, 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Tsitsipas, the third seed, was looking good in his round of 32 encounter with Kazakh player Mikhail Kukushkin. He went onto win in straight sets 6-3 6-4.
Karen Kachanov was out on court against USA’s Maxime Cressy. The Russian was the better player in the match as he was able to win in straight sets 6-4 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreak).
Home favorite Alexander Bublik was up against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. The two battled on for three exciting sets of tennis and the Kazakh player eventually prevailed in style. He won the match 6-0 4-6 6-3 to progress to the last 16.
19 year-old Luca Nardi of Italy was victorious against Alexander Shevchenko as he won in straight sets 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreak) 6-2.
A seemingly underwhelming performance from defending US Open champion and number one seed Carlos Alcaraz saw the young Spaniard get dispatched by lucky loser David Goffin who was handed a main draw slot after a not so impressive run in qualifying. The experienced Belgian went onto win in straight sets 7-5 6-3. A run of 62 matches where he won at least a single set came to an end for Alcaraz.
Second seed Daniil Medvedev looked in great shape as he took to the court against Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The Russian broke four times through the match as he went onto win in straight sets 6-3 6-1.
Pavel Kotov had a good outing in his first match at Astana as he beat Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets 6-4 6-4. Kotov needing just the two breaks of serve in the match to seal the deal and progress through to the next round.
Wednesday sees another set of round of 32 games to be played and features the likes of fourth seed Novak Djokovic, fresh off the title win in Tel Aviv, who takes on Cristian Garin. Ninth seed Marin Cilic will face Oscar Otte of Germany. Fifth seed Andrey Rublev will be up against Zhang Zhizhen of China in his round of 16 encounter. Luca Nardi will face third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16. Goffin will be up against Adrian Mannarino.
