With the help of spinner Nathan Lyon’s brilliant 9-wicket spell, Australia finished the first Test against Sri Lanka in just three days on Friday. Australia took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series after winning the first opening match by 10 wickets in Galle.
In this first test match, Sri Lanka were reduced to 212 runs in the first innings after winning the toss and elected to bat. Australia started playing 313 for eight in the first innings on the third day. Fast bowler Asitha Fernando made Pat Cummins (26) the victim of his yorker. He then dismissed Mitchell Swepson (01) with an in-swinger to end the Australian innings for 321. Thus Australia were ahead by 109 runs on the basis of the first innings.
With a lead of 109 runs in the first innings, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 113 in their second innings and after achieving a modest target of five runs in the first over, won the match by 10 wickets, five more in the first innings of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka. Spin bowler Nathan Lyon has become the tenth highest wicket-taker in Test cricket by taking four wickets in the second innings.
With 436 wickets in 109 Tests, Lyon is the highest wicket-taker behind former legend Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708), Anil Kumble (619) and Ravichandran Ashwin (442)
