Sam Northeast of Glamorgan made first-class cricket history on Saturday by becoming the first player after Brian Lara to score more than 400 runs in a single innings. Against Leicestershire, he scored an undefeated 410 off 450 deliveries.
He is the ninth batter overall to score 400 runs in a game of the highest calibre. As Glamorgan declared on 795/5, Northeast hammered 45 fours and three sixes his route to an undefeated 410 in the first innings.
The batsman entered the fray as his team was in trouble at 9/2 in 6.1 overs, but he steadied the ship with an outstanding 306-run partnership with South Africa’s Colin Ingram, who made a century (139). Before wicketkeeper-bat Chris Cooke joined Northeast, Glamorgan lost two more wickets in quick succession after his dismissal.
Cooke was still unbroken at 191 when Glamorgan captain David Lloyd declared the innings, preventing him from going over 200.
Additionally, Sam Northeast became the first player for Glamorgan to score 400 runs. Additionally, the team’s final score of 795/5d is the greatest in County history.
This season, Glamorgan is competing in County Championships Division Two, where they presently hold the third-place spot after nine games and four victories. Leicestershire, their rivals, have lost five and drawn four of their last ten games combined.
Earlier, Brian Lara had reached 400 while still unbeaten, which is still the record for the greatest individual score in a Test innings. In the fourth Test between the two teams in Antigua in 2004, the legendary West Indian batsman beat England to the record. His performance helped the Windies amass a fantastic total of 751/5 in the first innings, and after England was dismissed for only 285 runs, the Windies forced a follow-on. In the end, draw was the result of the game.
