India continued their unbeaten run at the 2022 Women’s Asia Cup with some superlative batting show. Further, India continued to support and give their lower order batters some crucial middle order experience while resting some of their experience players. Harmanpreet Kaur’s replacement as captain, Smriti Mandhana, chose to have her team bat first. After Shafali Verma was left on the bench for the match, Richa Ghosh was given the opening position.
However, the choice backfired when the wicketkeeper-batter fell for duck on the fifth ball. In actuality, India was reduced to 19/3 in just five overs, with Sabbhineni Meghana returning to the pavilion for a cheap price after being run out for two by D Hemalatha.
Eventually, Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma played wonderfully together for a match winning partnership of 129 runs, Rodrigues on the way who scored her second 70-plus score after returning from injury and where Deepti scored her first fifty of the competition.
Rodrigues played the aggressor in her 45-ball unbeaten inning, smashing 11 boundaries for an exceptional strike rate of 166.67. Deepti, meanwhile, scored 64 runs off 49 balls while hitting five fours and a few sixes.
In reply, UAE’s Theertha Satish was run out immediately and Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s twin blows in the second over came as a result and leaving UAE reeling at 5 for 3. Despite their low strike rate, Kavisha Egodage (30*) and Khushi Sharma (29) were able to put up a half century stand for the fourth wicket. They were ultimately reduced to just 74, and Rodrigues earned her second time Player of the Match award.
Brief Scoreboard : India 178/5 in 20 overs (Jemimah Rodrigues 75*, Deepti Sharma 64, Mahika Gaur 1-27) beat UAE 74/4 in 20 overs (Kavisha Egodage 30*, Khushi Sharma 29, Rajeshwari Gayakwad 2-20) by 104 runs.
