When chasing a target of 361 against New Zealand in the third ODI in Dublin, Ireland registered 359/9, their highest-ever ODI score and Ireland lost the game by one run. The previous best ODI score for Ireland was 331/8 against Zimbabwe on March 7, 2015.
Ireland made a good effort with the reply thanks to a record third-wicket stand between Stirling and Tector.
When opener Stirling was one of Matt Henry’s four victims and exited for 120 after reaching his 13th hundred with a boundary down to third man, he was incensed.
A new record for Ireland in ODIs was established during the 179-run partnership betweeen Stirling and Tector for the third wicket, and the No. 4 hitter maintained his impressive form by hitting five sixes on the way to his second series-high century.
The hosts’ chances of winning appeared limited after Tector went for 108, but George Dockrell’s quick 22 kept them in the game until the very last ball.
In the final over, “Ireland needed to score 10 runs, but the fast bowler Blair Tickner only managed to give up 8, including a bye on the final ball”. Ireland were almost there but came up painfully short.
However, in the series that went above the predictions, New Zealand won the first ODI by three wickets and the second by a margin of a world record 24 runs in the final over.
