Leclerc takes pole for the Italian Grand Prix as Russell joins him on front row

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start tomorrow’s Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Internazionale Monza from pole position as he out qualifies Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz. Verstappen and Sainz will however drop down the order due to grid penalties which puts George Russell of Mercedes alonside Leclerc on the front row of the grid.

Leclerc edged out Verstappen by 0.145 seconds to pole with a lap time of 1:20.161 to take pole position. Sainz was 0.268 seconds behind in P3.

But a lot of drivers were facing grid penalties which saw the order shuffle up. Verstappen took a 5-place grid penalty which sees him start P7. Sainz gets demoted to P18. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez is P13 as he drops ten places from P4. Hamilton took P5 but drops down to the back of the grid in 19th along with Alpha Tauri driver Yuki Tsunoda who starts 20th.

This puts George Russell in P2 alongside Leclerc despite the Englishman qualifying sixth. It’s an all McLaren second row with Lando Norris starting P3 and alongside him is Daniel Ricciardo in P4.

Starting 6th is Fernando Alonso of Alpine.

Nyck de Vries starts 8th in his first F1 race as he replaces Alexander Albon for the weekend at Williams, with the Thai driver ruled out with appendicitis.

Guanyu Zhou of Alfa Romeo starts from P9 with Nicolas Latifi of Williams alongside him in P10. The Aston Martins of Vettel and Stroll line up 11th and 12th.

Ocon in the other Alpine starts P14 with Bottas in the sister Alfa Romeo in P15.

The two Haas cars of Magnussen and Schumacher start P16 and P17.

Leclerc will hope to win the Italian Grand Prix for the second time in his career as he has won it before in 2019 and impress the home Tifosi once more.
