Marcelo leaves Real Madrid after winning the Champions League for the sixth time

After 15 years with Real Madrid, Marcelo has announced his departure. The Los Blancos defender has been one of the club’s most important players, and he announced his departure after Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League for the 14th time. With a total of 25 championships to his name, the Brazilian leaves the club as its most decorated player.

According to Marca, the Brazilian, who is now expected to explore for work elsewhere, said,

“It’s a very nice moment. When you are the first captain, you dream of lifting the cup and I have become the only Brazilian to lift a Champions League as captain of Real Madrid,”

He added,

“The emotion is brutal, it was my last game with Real Madrid. But I am very happy. It’s not a day of sadness, I’m leaving with a lot of joy, grateful to the fans and the magical nights I’ve experienced at the Bernabeu.”

When Real Madrid won the Spanish league for the 35th time last month, Marcelo had won his 24th title with the club. In January, he won his 23rd Spanish Super Cup victory, tying the legendary Francisco “Paco” Gento of the 1950s and 1960s.

On Saturday, Karim Benzema tied Sergio Ramos for the most titles won by a Madrid player. Benzema and Marcelo are two of several Madrid players who have tied Cristiano Ronaldo for the most Champions League titles with five. Gento has six European titles under his name.

Marcelo has six Spanish league trophies, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, two Copa del Reys, and five Spanish Super Cups in his trophy cabinet. With Brazil, he has also won a Confederations Cup and two Olympic medals.

Marcelo had lost his starting position this season and had not featured much under Carlo Ancelotti. He was unable to participate in the championship game on Saturday.

Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, and Francisco Isco are among the other stars likely to leave Madrid this season. Luka Modric’s contract is poised to be extended.

Dani Alves, Marcelo’s former Brazil teammate, has the most career titles with 41, the majority of which he won with Barcelona.
