Michael Jordan ‘Last Dance’ jersey sells for $10.1 million

Many of the struggles Michael Jordan and his Chicago Bulls mates had on the way to their final title together in 1998 were described in “The Last Dance.” The renowned documentary’s publication has led to a rise in the fame of that illustrious campaign.

The market for sports memorabilia appears to have been interested in Jordan and that Bulls club as well.

A Jordan jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals was reported to have sold for $10.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction on Tuesday. It surpasses the previous record-holder for any item of sports memorabilia, which stood at $9.28 million for the late Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” World Cup shirt.

Notably, it also breaks the previous mark for a Jordan artefact. A 1997–98 Upper Deck Game Jersey patch card with an autograph set the previous record for a Jordan item when it sold for $2.7 million in October 2021. In their 1998 series, Jordan’s Bulls beat the Utah Jazz in six games.

Undoubtedly, the cost is absurdly excessive. But paying one of the highest sums ever for a souvenir from one of the greatest basketball players in history seems almost justified.
