Novak Djokovic announces that he will not be taking part in the US Open

The US Open this year will not see Novak Djokovic in the main draw as he announced earlier today that he would not be competing in the tournament as he is unable to travel to New York.

The 21 time grand slam champion and 3 time winner of the US Open said that he is cannot participate in the tournament as he is unvaccinated against Covid-19.

The US government requires travelers to provide proof that they are vaccinated against the virus to be allowed to enter the country.

Novak took to Twitter to announce that he is withdrawing from the competition.

The drama started early this year at Melbourne, when the Serbian was involved in a vaccine saga where he was eventually denied the chance to defend his Australian Open crown as he was deported from Australia having not taken the vaccine. Novak has been dead set against taking the vaccine even though it may affect his chances of competing in tournaments.

The Serb skips two majors in a year for the first time. He ends the year with a quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros and a seventh Wimbledon crown after he beat Nick Kyrgios in the final.
