Opener’s Brandon King’s fantastic contribution of 83 not out in the opening, helped the Jamaica Tallawahs pulled off an incredible comeback to claim the Caribbean Premier League Title in 2022. Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks put the run chase in motion with a fast 86-run stand as the Barbados Royals were completely outplayed in the finals.
Royals had only lost two matches during the league stage and blasted their way into the finals with a win in the first qualifier, making them the favourites heading into the finals. The Tallawahs, in contrast hand, had the most challenging journey to the title because they had to win three straight contests after just scraping by by finishing fourth in the playoffs.
They may, however, be proud of Brooks for rising to the occasion again after scoring a hundred in the Qualifiers 2. Despite Kennar Lewis leaving for a duck in the opening over of the chase, the Tallawahs didn’t panic and chased it down with ease.
In the epic Finals, the ball-damaging duo of Fabian Allen and Nicholson Gordon kept the Royals at 161/7 before the outstanding knock from Brandon King. Rahkeem Cornwall’s aggressive play at the top of the order gave the Royals, as compared to the Tallawahs, a solid start. Cornwall persisted in hitting sixes, aiding his team’s 54 run opening five over total. Allen initially took Cornwall on the final ball to halt the powerplay before rattling the wood to remove Kyle Mayers.
Following the powerplay, the scoring rate sharply dropped off, with only 18 runs coming off the next four innings. And further they slipped and kept losing wickets and was restricted to only 161 runs in their quota of 20 overs.
Brief scorecard : Barbados Royals 161/7 in 20 overs (Azam Khan 51, Fabian Allen 3/24, Nicholson Gordon 3/33) lost to Jamaica Tallawahs 162/2 in 16.1 overs (Brandon King 83*, Shamarh Brooks 47, Kyle Mayers 1/14) by 8 wickets
