After accidentally hitting himself with his own racquet on Friday, Rafael Nadal survived a rare injury scare to advance to the third round of the US Open. It took the Spaniard 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 to defeat Italian Fabio Fognini, but only after the Italian suffered an inexplicable self-inflicted injury when leading 3-0 in the fourth set.
The four-time champion, who also has a men’s record 22 Grand Slam victories, got hit in the nose by his racket as he reached for a ball and it ricochet off the court. Rafael Nadal would give his best to win his 23th Grand Slam Title.
He had to take a break from the game to go for a medical break to have the wound treated before resuming with a bandage over his nose. Nadal dropped the first set in his second round too in a row before dropping same in his opening match against Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata.
Rafael Nadal will play his round 3 against Richard Gasquet of France, against whom he has a 17-0 career record, after winning his late-night match, with a total of fifteen serve breaks and 97 unforced errors.
