Rakuten Japan Open Day 5: Quarter-finals day as it happened

Quarter-finals day went underway earlier today at the Rakuten Japan Open in Tokyo. The remaining eight players were looking to make the most of the day.

Fifth seed Nick Kyrgios had to unfortunately withdraw minutes prior to his quarter-final encounter with third seed Taylor Fritz. Later he did reveal that he was going through some asthma related issues over the course of the week.

A fine run in Tokyo by Spaniard Pedro Martinez came to an end at the hands of his Korean opponent Kwon soon-woo. He went on to defeat Martinez in straight sets 6-3 6-0 breaking the Martinez serve 5 times during the match.

In the last quarter-final, fourth seed Frances Tiafoe wasted no time to get going on court as he continue his fine form to beat his Serbian opponent Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets 6-0 6-4.

It’s all to play for on Saturday as there are four that remain. Kwon soon-woo will take on fourth seed Frances Tiafoe as third seed Taylor Fritz will take on seventh seed Denis Shapovalov. There is a possibility of an all American final on Sunday.
