Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona’s new star striker, overcame his underwhelming return to Bayern Munich by scoring twice against Elche with ten men in La Liga. Barcelona climbed to the top of the league rankings, one point ahead of rival Real Madrid, after a 3-0 victory over Elche at Camp Nou.
Lewandowski scored twice, bringing his total number of goals since joining the Catalan club from Bayern Munich this summer to 11 in eight games.
Elche set up a strict defence to begin the game. However, their strategy was foiled when Gonzalo Verdu tackled Lewandowski as the final defender and was ultimately dismissed in the 15th minute. After that, it was all Barcelona. In the 33rd minute, Lewandowski scored the game’s first goal after converting a cross from left-back Alejandro Balde. In the 41st minute, Dutch striker Memphis Depay extended Barcelona’s advantage with another assist from youthful Balde. Just three minutes into the second half, the Polish striker put an end to the match by converting an Ousmane Dembele cross.
After the victory, Lewandowski received glowing praise from Barcelona coach Xavi, who described him as a diligent and modest player.
What has surprised me the most about Robert Lewandowski is his human aspect. He works hard, he is very professional, but he is very humble.
