Roger Federer announces retirement from professional tennis

Earlier on social media today, Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer announced that he will be ending his illustrious tennis career after the Laver Cup, which will be his last tournament. The 41 year-old was struggling with knee related problems for the last 3 years, which saw him lose a lot of playing time out on court. His last appearance at a grand slam would be Wimbledon 2021 where he lost out in the quarter-finals to Hubert Hurkacz.

Federer stated that the upcoming Laver Cup which is scheduled to begin from next week in London, would be his last tournament on the ATP tour. A career spanning an incredible 24 years comes to an end.

Federer in his announcement reflected on the last 3 years where he had recurring knee issues and what challenges it presented to him. He acknowledged how he was getting old and how he should recognize the time to end his competitive career.

“The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour.”, he added.
