T20 World Cup 2022 : England Thrashes Afghanistan By 5 Wickets In Their Opening Match, Sam Curran Took Five Wickets

England after electing to bowl first their bowlers came charged up against the Afghanistan openers, both Zazai was dismissed by Stokes and Gurbaz fell to Wood were dismissed inside the Powerplay and only managing to score only 35 runs in the Powerplay.

Ibrahim and Ghani were building a partnership of 30 odd runs but Sam Curran provided the break through by taking the wicket of Ibrahim with top scored with 32 runs and further Afghanistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Captain Nabi not contributing that much and Rashid Khan fell for 0 to Curran.

Ghani was second highest scorer for Afghanistan by scoring 30 runs. Afghanistan only managed to get a score of 112 all out. For England, it was Sam Curran who ripped apart the Afghanistan line up by taking 5 wicket haul and giving away only 10 runs in his 3.2 overs.

Ben Stokes and Mark Wood took each 2 wickets apart. After a quick start, Afghanistan’s fielders were unable to hold onto the catches, where Alex Hales was dropped on 4 and 17. Afghanistan took the both openers in a quick fashion where, England’s opener Buttler scored 18 runs only and Alex Hales contributed only 19 runs. 

Afghanistan kept attacking as England lost half of its team and Rashid Khan sent Harry Brook packing. Livingstone, who scored an 29 runs not out scored the final runs with help from Moeen Ali contributing 8 runs ensured England secured the win by 5 wickets.

Brief Scorecard : Afghanistan 112 (Ibrahim Zadran 32, Sam Curran 5-10) lost to England 113/5 in 18.1 overs (Livingstone 29*, Rashid Khan 1-17) by five wickets.
