Tokyo to Host 2025 World Athletics Championships

Tokyo, Japan has been chosen by the World Athletics Council to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships. The World Athletics Council also announced that the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships would be hosted in Medulin and Pula in Croatia, and the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships will be held in Tallahassee, Florida, at their meeting in Oregon, USA.

In 2025, the year the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) celebrates its centenary, the World Athletics Championships will take place in Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium, the venue of the Olympic Games last year. Tokyo will have the chance to pack its Olympic stadium in 2025 with spectators who were unable to attend the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games owing to pandemic limitations.

Within an extremely strong field of candidates Tokyo offered a compelling bid.

I hope this will be a shining light for Japan as they celebrate 100 years of the JAAF in 2025, by bringing world-class athletics back to the people in Tokyo.

Sebastian Coe, World Athletics President

The amazing long jump battle between gold medalist Mike Powell and Carl Lewis, which broke the world record, took place in Tokyo in 1991, and it was also held in Japan in 2007 with Osaka serving as the host city.
