UEFA Nations League: Denmark STUN Defending Champions France

Despite suffering a 2-0 loss in Denmark and finishing second in both the Nations League and the World Cup, France escaped relegation due to Austria’s loss. Prior to the competition’s beginning on November 20 in Qatar, it was the final game for the World Cup-bound teams.

In addition to Australia and Tunisia, the French and Danes will also meet up in Qatar. Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, 37, may compete in his final international competition at the World Cup, and he’s in fine form. In Vienna, the Croats took the lead after six minutes when their seasoned captain scored while unattended inside the penalty area.

The French defence was inexperienced and failed to deal with a corner, which left No. 3 goalie Alphonse Areola vulnerable. The Danes took the lead through forward Kasper Dolberg in the 34th minute, and midfielder Andreas Skov Olsen made it 2-0 moments later. The French squad came alive in the second half, but star attacker Kylian Mbappe missed a one-on-one opportunity against Kasper Schmeichel and had two other feeble attempts stopped in quick succession.

Despite only winning one of their six games and scoring five goals—the fewest in the group—Coach Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus squad finished third, one point ahead of the Austrians.
