Vinesh Phogat Slams Critics After Bronze at World Championships

After winning the 53 kg bronze medal on Sunday at the World Championships in Belgrade, wrestler Vinesh Phogat slammed her critics. She became the first Indian woman to take home two gold at the international level, but the criticism she received after losing to Mongolia’s Khulan Batkhuyag in her initial match didn’t help her case.

Phogat tweeted her response to the critics after winning the bronze.

She said in her comments that athletes always give it their all but are by no means robots. She added that in today’s culture, being an expert may be done while relaxing at home.

Phogat said it is depressing when people feel they have the authority to criticise players and make judgments about whether to quit or terminate their careers.

Phogat lost to Batkhuyag in the shocking qualifying round, but on Wednesday, she pulled off an incredible comeback to overcome Sweden’s Emma Jonna Malmgren 8-0.

The gold medalist from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Phogat, also questioned the fans, asking if admirers from other nations equally lambast athletes when they don’t win a medal.
