Wimbledon 2022: Halep breezes through, 2021 semi-finalist Shapovalov crashes

Former champion Simona Halep beat Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 7-5 6-4 to reach the third round of this year’s edition of Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Canadian sensation Denis Shapovalov crashed out in the second round against Brandon Nakashima losing 2-6 6-4 1-6 6-7.

Flipkens, who is retiring from professional tennis, played her last Grand slam singles match against Halep. Bowing out in defeat, the 36-year-old bid an emotional farewell by leaving her headband on the service line to leave her presence at Wimbledon forever.

Promising Canadian youth faced many a trouble on grass this Wimbledon season. Shapovalov, who reached the semifinals in 2021 but lost to Novak Djokovic, was stunned by American Nakashima on court 12. 6th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who has consistently given a hard time to top seeds in recent years, surprisingly lost to Maxime Cressy in the first round.
